Milk (water or bean broth can be used if your family is dairy-free)
Instructions
In a large saucepan or pot, saute onions, garlic and butter until soft and tender.
Add beans, and additional liquid (milk or water) if necessary
Add seasonings and spices mixing well
Bring to a slow simmer and allow to cook on low heat 10-20 minutes, stirring occasionally
If you like a smoother, runnier bean texture, slowly add some milk (or water), mixing as you go
Once beans are cooked and not too thick or runny, mash them with a potato masher, fork, food processor, or hand blender, leaving a few chunks for texture
