Homestead Barn Hop #152

“Cultivating the Homestead Community”

Nothing too earth-shattering to report this week– just typical life on the homestead… We seem to be on a pattern of 50 degree days interspersed with snowstorms, so the Prairie Kids and I play outside on the nice days, and then stay cozy by the woodstove during the others.

I am madly scheming about my garden plans for the year, though! I’ve decided to try Ruth Stout’s famous mulching method this year, so I’m on the lookout for a boatload of mulching materials. The thought of less weeding and watering is making me excited already! Now if the snow would just leave… 😉

This hop is hosted by The Prairie Homestead, New Life on a Homestead, Weed Em and Reap, and The Elliott Homestead.

Did you share any homesteading related posts on your blog this week? If so, we’d love to have you link up below! Even if you don’t have a blog, we always welcome your comments!

Some Simple Guidelines:

1. Please remember that the Homestead Barn Hop is meant to be a place to share homesteading related encouragement and inspiring ideas specifically related to homesteading. In an effort to keep our weekly round-up clutter free, links which are not specifically homestead related, and any promotions such as giveaways, contests, carnivals, etc, will be deleted in order to maintain the integrity of the Barn Hop.

2. Please remember this is a family-friendly link up. Any pictures or posts linked to the hop which aren’t appropriate for our children to view or read will also be deleted immediately. We’re pretty conservative, so we ask that you use good judgment and err on the side of caution.

3. Make sure that you link to your Barn Hop post, not your blog’s main page, so your guests won’t have any trouble finding your great tips.

4. Please link back to the Homestead Barn Hop in the post that you share. Feel free to grab the banner at the top of this post to link back to us with.

5. Occasionally there is a problem posting due to glitches in the internet or the Linky Tools. If you have difficulties posting and it does not show up immediately, please wait a little while and try re-posting (this helps avoid double posting). We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, be we do not have absolute control over the internet. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

I’m feverishly working on garden stuff as well. Here in our area of NE Texas, mulch is a must to not only preserve the moisture when the temps really start rising but also so shade the soil for some pretty intense heat as well as significantly reducing weeding chores. One thing I found out the hard way – don’t heavily much your squashes. Those plants grow large enough to shade the soil by themselves and heavy mulch gives a beautiful place for all the squash bugs to hide. I lost my entire crop one year – lesson learned! Hang in there, warmer weather’s coming!

Hello everyone, Seems like the garden is the big subject these days. I have everything done but the tilling. Which hubby has to do. Seeds are ready to plant. I hope by this weekend I’ll have them down in the dirt ready for them to spring up. I’ll be trying one raise bed this year. And if all goes well I’ll add more come summer. Our cow Reba was at the fair this Sunday and came in 2nd. Now she back home and all is well. Hope all is well for everyone in farm land!!!!! Have a Great Day. Mare

Don’t feel bad, we haven’t been able to plant here in southern Indiana yet either. We did break ground for it a couple of days ago, but are holding off from doing anything else, since we have snow showers forecast for the next several days. :/ Thanks for hosting Jill, and have a great week.

I don’t get to have a garden this year 🙁 The area where we had our garden last year needs to be turned back into our back lawn again – according to the real estate agent! I will garden a few plants in pots, however, and up on our future homestead I am going to grow some green beans and use drip irrigation for those (since we don’t live there yet). In the meantime we are going to be working on our permanent raised bed garden structure at the future homestead. We have a large area that we will be clearing, fencing and then building raised beds with concrete block. Hopefully this will be ready next year. Thanks for hosting the hopping party!

I’m sharing my super simple method for making coconut ghee. Why buy it in the store when it’s so easy to make at home!
