I’ve been ignoring water…

I’m pretty religious about checking my food labels for all the nasty stuff like MSG or hydrogenated oils, but I have to sheepishly admit that I’ve been conveniently ignoring thinking about what may be in my water for a while now…

Since we have our own well, I assumed that we were pretty “safe.” But I recently discovered that even us country folk aren’t immune from water contamination.

According to the CDC, over 15 million people in the United States obtain water from a private well (1). I’m included in that statistic, and I bet a bunch of you are too.

While private well-owners generally don’t have to worry about things like chlorine or fluoride, there are some other nasties that can contaminate well water. The CDC’s list of the top twelve outbreaks in private water systems includes hepatitis A, arsenic, E. coli, salmonella, and giardia (2), not to mention lead leaching from old pipes and nitrates.

With a list like that, I think it’s high time that I take water purity a little more seriously.

And that is why I’m thrilled to be able to give one of my readers their very own Royal Berkey Water Filter. This baby is the Cadillac of water purification systems folks.

Here is the condensed list of all the nasty stuff a Berkey filter will remove from your water:

  • Viruses
  • Pathogenic bacteria and cysts (like E. coli and giardia)
  • Nitrates & nitrites
  • Parasites
  • Herbicides & pesticides
  • VOCs
  • Detergents
  • Heavy metals (like lead, mercury, and chromium)
  • Iron
  • Chlorine
  • Sediment
  • Nasty tastes and odors
  • Chloroform

If you aren’t a fan of fluoride (I’m sure not…) there is even a separate fluoride filter you can buy that will remove that as well.

For me, the best part about a Berkey filter is that it can be used for both everyday use AND in emergency or survival situations. According to the Berkey website:

Berkey Water Filter systems are capable of purifying both treated water (municipal/city water) and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds, and water supplies in foreign countries.

Now that’s impressive.

And I get to give a Berkey Water Filter to one of you!

  1. Lena Guyot says

I have chronic Lyme disease and have very conscientiously used a distiller. Its drawback is that costs money to run and depletes the water of good stuff as well as bad. Berkey looks llke a promising alternative.

    • Eve Ross says

Lena – have you tried purchasing a trace minerals liquid to add to your water so you aren’t losing any of the beneficial elements?

      • Lena Guyot says

Yes, I do add trace minerals and also take mineral supplements. I prill and magnetize my distilled water as well, so it’s not bad, but I’d love to have good water without the electrical expense which does add up. We also travel extensively in our Airstream and our electric doesn’t support the distiller and any other big draw at the same time. And, of course, there are the times when we ‘boondock’ and have very limited battery electricity.
        Be well,

  2. Lillace Christianson says

The item is gorgeous–even better that we might actually be able to drink CLEAN water! I grew up in the country on fresh spring water and I do miss it.

  3. says

Thanks for the WONDERFUL giveaway! (The link at #1 didn’t show up at first but did when I changed browsers. I think it was just a Firefox thing but thought I’d let you know.)

  4. Shana Trahan says

This looks good enough that my husband is interested in buying one even if we don’t win it! I’d still much rather win it :)

  5. says

I spent a majority of my life in a country house with well water. It was filtered and amazing. My husband grew up on city water and claimed it to be the, “Best Water Ever”. Yuck! Well, for the last few years we have been living on a military base and have grown to detest the heavily chlorinated and floridated water here. It literally smells like you are drinking a swimming pool! And my hubby’s beloved hometown city water just turned our stomachs last time we visited. We know better about water and such now and we don’t want our little ones drinking any nasty water! We looked into the Berkey Filters not too long ago but opted to put off buying one until we have moved to our new house in May. This giveaway is perfectly timed! Whoot!

  6. Robbie says

This is one of those “my dream may (possibly) come true” kind of raffles! I have used a Big Berkey in the past and absolutely loved it. The opportunity to have one in my home for the health of my family is really exciting! Thanks for offering this opportunity!

  7. Ann Marie Forbes Jones says

I can’t find the entry page . I’m sorry but I clicked on 3 of the links but it doesn’t take me anywhere but here. :-(

  8. says

I’ve been wanting one of these Berkeys for YEARS. It’s more important to me now living near a power plant than ever but we’re on city spring water which keeps coming up with contaminants. We can’t yet afford a Berkey which breaks my heart because we have a toddler and two small dogs. I buy filtered water from Walmart at the moment. What a gift this would make! Thank you for the opportunity to win one.

  9. Marsha L says

I have my own well on my acreage but it is high in nitrates. Also smells like rotten eggs! It is safe to drink but not too appealing! A Berkey Water Filter would be a very useful item for us.
    Thank you for the opportunity.

  10. says

I love my Berkey! We use it every day and have extra filters in case of a long term off the grid situation. It sits right on my raised kitchen island (which is why it turns up in so many of my blog photos). We bought our Berkey several years ago after doing a LOT of research. It is certainly the one I would recommend. Congratulations to the lucky winner.

  11. LindaKay says

Isn’t it beautiful? we have excellent well water . My daughter and grandbabies live near Boise Idaho and yuck. would love to gift this to them.

  12. Jennifer Hernandez says

Wow, these are so amazing. I have a friend that has one of these and I have been admiring it for over a year,

  13. says

Traveling and living full time in an RV where we are often hooked up to wells or other sources of water that could be in doubt, I would LOVE to have a Berkey!!!!! What a great Christmas Present that would be for us! Thanks so much for hosting this giveaway…

  14. Diane Bernard says

This is going on our wish list! My husband was very interested in this because it’s portable & non electric. We’re trying to prepare for emergencies but I want it just for the day to day advantages. How could you not want one. And it’s elegant looking!

  15. Charlotte Bays says

One of these would be a blessing at our house. We can’t drink our water and have to take gallon jugs 20 miles to my daughter’s house to get good water. They keep sending us letters saying they are working on the problem but it’s been going on for several years. They say if you have health issues don’t drink it and my husband does.

  16. Connie cabe says

We get our drinking water from a well , I would love to have one of these filters . I have a friend who purchased one and she just loves it.

  17. Ashley says

My husband I will soon be heading overseas as missionaries to the Congo and actually need to get one of these filters to take with us! What perfect timing for the give away!! How amazing would that be?!?

  18. Amy says

Oh, how I would LOVE to win this! We have 2 Brita pitchers and a Zero Water one, but it’s hard to keep them full – plus they’re not near as effective as one of these! And the shower heads….wow!!

  19. Mike Baber says

These really are the Cadillac of water-filtration for the family. And yes, we even have to watch our H2O out here in the country. Thanks for the great Blog. I’ve shared it with lots of family and friends!

  20. rachel says

Why does being a subscriber never seem to count any more??? You and other “real food” sites are under this statement. P.S. Miss you and the cow pic=made me smile. Keep doing a good job!

  21. wendy carbone says

I am trying to find way for a healthier lifestyle for my family. This would be a great addition.

  22. myllysia says

Thank you for the opportunity to win. This would be a great way to help my family stay healthy and safe.

  23. says

I have a Berkey! But I want to get my children who have children their own! I don’t want my grandchildren drinking fluoride and the other toxins!

  24. Maribel f says

These would be perfect for me and my family I only have a filter that dosenft remove as many chemicals like this one

  25. says

My Mother has used one of these for many years now. They are awesome pieces of equipment and worth every penny. I would LOVE to own one. Hopefully soon. I use water straight from the well, but you never know about contaminations.
I sure hope I win it because I know just how wonderful they are.

  26. Caffequeen says

We are just beginning our stockpiling and preps for disasters and I have a Berkey on my to-do/wishlist! Thanks for the opportunity to win one and bring my family that much closer to being prepared for whatever may come.

  27. Pam says

A great giveaway! We have well water and we would really benefit using Royal Berkey Water Filter to filter out impurities in our water. Thanks.

  28. Verna says

I have wanted a Berkey for many years. Just not in my budget. I love the Berkey, thanks for the chance to recieve one free.

  29. Anna Menchaca says

I have been wanting to get the Berkey for a while now but we have had alot of family medical issues come up. My daughter has one and she loves it.

  30. Sarah Schneider says

I really want one of these for my parents, their water makes feel horrible when I visit them! We invested in a Berkey and it had made such a difference in our life!

  31. Leah says

Hello there! I was searching for information on urban homesteading and came across your website. I can’t wait to read it over, as it looks very informative! I was so excited when I saw you were having a contest for Berkey. I have been drooling over getting a Berkey for everyday use, and also to have on hand for emergencies as well. We live in the country and have well water that needs filtered. We also have been trying to learn how we can be more self sufficient and be ready in times of emergencies. Thanks again for the chance to enter the contest!

  32. Charla Doughty says

Wow! have spent the last two days researching this website…fantastic from all reviews and handsome to boot!

  33. says

This would make MY Christmas. Seriously, I’ve wanted one for almost a year and I just don’t have the budget for it. We make do with a Brita but I swear we spend a ton of time waiting for the water to filter. Seems like the pitcher is always empty (and that’s refilling it whenever we use it!) I hate that it also may strip out the good minerals but we know our city’s water is fluoridated and has arsenic at EPA declared ‘safe’ levels.

  34. Terri O. says

This is a great giveaway! I am in the process of deciding whether to by a Berkey portable or try to save for an in house system. I would love to win the portable Berkey!

  35. Cathy Tuggle says

Wow, what a lucky winner this one will be! BUT more so it would be another way for my family to eat and drink healthy! I would just LOVE to win this!

Thanks for an awesome Give-a-way and the best of luck to everyone :)

  36. L. says

Sick and tired of giveaways only open to u.s. residents.
I live in Rome, i follow your blog, share most of the information you post, and then, i am left out for a giveaway cause i’m not a u.s. resident.
In my honest ppinion it’ws not fair to leave out all the fans overseas in Europe and if you have any, that means you are a good blogger.
Just want to let you know that itìs not nice.
Kind of tired feeling left out every time there’s a giveaway, i always get excited and want to participate and then i read “only to u.s. residents”. I have brought many of my friends to follow your blog but this is dissappointing.

Sorry to disappoint you. Unfortunately, the manufacturer set the terms for this giveaway, so there wasn’t much I could do. However, for the personally sponsored giveaways I’ve been doing recently, I’m offering a gift card if the winner is outside of the US, so you could definitely enter those.

  37. three feathers says

great product to have on hand, we would love to get one since our water municipal was forced by the govt to add fluoride last year. maybe i’ll win and can wrap it up for christmas! thank you for this opportunity

  38. says

Nice! We have well water also, but, it is very hard, here in Central Texas. We bought a filter that I am unsatisfied with, not so much for the filtering, (works fine) but, it wastes as much water as it uses, and that is insane. Or at least, really unsustainable. I’ve wanted a Berkey for some time, to eliminate that waste, so, here’s crossing my fingers. Thanks so much for the opportunity.

    Best! DW

  39. deb c. says

Thanks for the opportunity! I’ve been following Big Berkey on Pinterest for awhile now! They pin some great stuff! I’d love to own one of these filters & have been seriously considering buying one. To win one would be even better! Merry Christmas!

  40. Sherrie says

Thanks for the opportunity to win this water filter! It would be great to add this to my kitchen. We have very hard well water and I know it would be a health conscience addition for our family.

  41. Christine Diener says

We just moved to Kansas City, Mo from Redding, Ca. 2 months ago. Oh, how how we miss our snow mountain spring water!!! Since moving here we have been unable to find a water that has hydrated us. We have been on the look out for something that would be healthy and hydrating. Does this Berkey water filter work well with that? Sounds amazing :) Thanks!

  42. says

Jill, I’d like to enter the giveaway, but I can’t see the link for the Berkey Water Filter website. Will it count if I just go find their website myself?

  43. cathy says

I have been wanting to get one of these now for a long time. One concern I have is that they don’t filter out nitrates or nitrites I noticed that you listed them in what they get out, but according to Berkey’s website based off an article they posted, nitrates can only be removed by distillation, reverse osmosis, ion exchange or blending. Ion exchange seems like the best bet, but they are crazy expensive ($1500-$2000, yikes) and take electricity to run. I have decided I want to get a Berkey for every day use, but went ahead and printed off some instructions on how to distill water using my pressure canner in case of emergency, since our only water available if the city water stops is an irrigation pond, which I am sure is just loaded with nitrates. Here’s the link to the article on Berkey’s website:

I’ve wanted one for a few years now. I have chronic pain, fibromyalgia, CFS, and several other illnesses. i am trying to live as naturally as possible, as i think the chemicals and other crud is making me ill. I would love to win one lol being disabled and on a fixed income doesn’t afford me to get one :/
